The Second Nuclear Unit In UAE Might Operate

The National Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced at a press conference on March 9 that it had issued an operating license to the unit 2 of the Baraka Nuclear Power Plant, saying that the license for the unit's operation will be valid for the next 60 years. Now the test and start up work will be put into operation, including fuel loading and power raising, until Unit 2 reaches 100% capacity, and then it will be connected to the national grid.

 

Construction of Unit 1 of the Baraka Nuclear Power Plant was completed in 2018, and the UAE's national nuclear regulator issued a 60-year operating license for Unit 1 in February 2020.Construction of units 3 and 4 is 92 percent and 85 percent complete, respectively, while construction of the entire plant is 94 percent complete.Once the four reactors at Baraka come online, the facility will provide about 25 percent of the country's electricity and reduce carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels to generate electricity by as much as 21 million tons.

 

The Baraka nuclear power plant, the first in the Arab region, is located in the Al Zafra district of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Construction began in 2012.The project is also seen as a way for the UAE to diversify its energy mix.However, during construction, due to personnel training and other factors, Unit 1, which was originally scheduled to start in 2017, did not receive operational permission until February 2020.

 

Borated polyethylene is one of the most commonly used anti - neutron materials in neutron shielding. Because of its high strength, uniform density, acid and alkali corrosion resistance and superior neutron shielding performance, this material has been widely used in neutron shielding protection. At present, China's boron-containing polyethylene is mainly imported, and most is 5% boron-containing polyethylene. In order to improve the shielding effect of borated polyethylene and solve the problem that boron-containing polyethylene is difficult to be commercialized in China, borated polyethylene board with boron content of 8% was developed and its sub-shielding performance was studied. The results show that when the thickness of the boron-containing polyethylene plate is 10cm, the shielding efficiency of 241Am-Be neutron is 82.5%, and the shielding efficiency of 252Cf neutron is 90.9%. When the thickness of the boron-containing polyethylene plate is 20cm, the shielding efficiency for neutrons from 241Am-Be source is 95.6%, and the shielding efficiency for neutrons from 252Cf source is 97.8%. When the thickness of the borated polyethylene plate is 30cm, the shielding efficiency of 241Am-Be neutron is 98.2%, and the shielding efficiency of 252Cf neutron is 99.3%. It can be concluded that the 8% boron-containing polyethylene plate is an efficient neutron shielding material, which can be effectively used for neutron shielding protection in neutron and neutron and γ mixed radiation fields.
